Dr Daniel Athevale

Daniel is a Comprehensive Ophthalmologist, with a special interest in Cataract, Glaucoma and Medical Retina. He has sub-specialty Fellowship training in complex cataract and glaucoma filtration surgery, as well as Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS).

Dan obtained his medical degree from the University of Sydney in 2011, and followed this with a Master in Public Health, graduating in 2013. He completed his internship at Gosford and Wyong Hospitals, and then moved to Royal North Shore to complete his residency training.

After developing a passion for Ophthalmology, he then spent 12 months working at the Sydney Eye Hospital, where he stayed to undertake his specialty training, culminating in his final year of training as the Senior Registrar at Royal North Shore Hospital.

He then moved to the United Kingdom to pursue a Fellowship in Glaucoma and Complex Anterior Segment Surgery at the world-renowned Bristol Eye Hospital, where he was recognised as the Outstanding Fellow of 2021-22. He was awarded the prestigious Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists’ Alan James scholarship to help pursue his sub-specialty interest.

During his training, Dan developed a taste for regional and rural practice, and has worked in many regional settings from the North-West coast of Tasmania to Lismore in the Northern Rivers of NSW, and continues to visit Bundaberg in central Queensland to provide a sub-specialty service in cataract and glaucoma.

In addition to complex cataract and glaucoma surgery, Dan was trained extensively in Oculoplastic surgery under the tutelage of Dr Brett O’Donnell at Royal North Shore and Sydney Eye Hospitals, and Medical Retina under Prof. Paul Mitchell at Westmead Hospital.

Dan continues to be involved in research, having published peer-reviewed papers in international Ophthalmology and Surgery journals. When not at work, he’s probably pursuing his interests in squash or tennis, traveling, or spending time with his family and friends.

He is excited to come on board with the team at Hunter Eye Surgeons to provide the local community in the Hunter region his expertise in cataract, glaucoma and medical retina.
